Switzerland rejects right-wing bid to cap national population at 10 million by 2050

Swiss voters rejected a constitutional initiative by the Swiss People's Party (SVP) on June 14, 2026, that would have required the government to limit the country's population to 10 million by 2050 — a level official projections show Switzerland on course to reach by the early 2040s. Preliminary results from national broadcaster SRF showed approximately 55 percent against and 45 percent in favour. Critics successfully argued that a population cap would force Switzerland to restrict asylum rights, scrap its EU free-movement deal, and deprive key sectors such as healthcare, finance, and pharmaceuticals of foreign workers they depend on.
