Singapore government studies more rental housing options — co-living, Build-To-Rent — for young Singaporeans

National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat announced on August 3, 2026 that the government is exploring expanding rental housing models including co-living, long-stay serviced apartments, and Build-To-Rent schemes to meet growing demand from younger Singaporeans who prefer flexible accommodation before buying. Chee spoke at the opening of Mber Co-Living and Serviced Apartments in Serangoon, noting that while homeownership remains a key pillar of Singapore's social compact, there is recognised demand from people who wish to rent first to live independently or test out a neighbourhood. The government aims to offer housing options suited to different life stages rather than a single pathway.
