Russia struck Kyiv on May 24, 2026, with 600 drones and 90 missiles including a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, killing at least two people and injuring 77 across every district of the city according to Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most drones and more than half the missiles, but the Chernobyl disaster museum was destroyed and one of the city's oldest markets burned down. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged additional EU support for Ukrainian air defenses, calling the attack evidence of 'the Kremlin's brutality and disregard for both human life and peace negotiations.'
