Malaysia's DAP votes 84% to stay in PM Anwar Ibrahim's unity government despite coalition's electoral losses

Malaysia's Democratic Action Party held a national congress in Putrajaya on Aug 16 where 1,857 of the 2,223 delegates who voted — 84 per cent — backed remaining in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's unity government, rejecting calls for the party to withdraw over a string of state election defeats. The decision eases immediate pressure on Anwar, whose Pakatan Harapan coalition had lost control of Sabah, Johor and most recently Negeri Sembilan on Aug 1 to a Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional electoral pact. With 40 parliament seats, DAP is the largest party in Anwar's coalition, and its withdrawal would have threatened his parliamentary majority ahead of the next mandatory general election before February 2028.
