Iran sets six conditions — including full US withdrawal and sanctions relief — to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr announced on August 9, 2026 that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the United States meets six conditions, going significantly beyond the June 17 US-Iran memorandum of understanding. The conditions include an end to US threats and military operations against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq; withdrawal of US naval and air forces from the region; full lifting of sanctions; compensation for two 'imposed wars'; and the unconditional release of frozen Iranian assets. The IRGC separately stated that reopening Hormuz was contingent on US acceptance and was independent of ongoing Iran-Oman negotiations.
